When Burl Burns and Mary Mann bought a couple of longhorn Burl said he wanted them “just to look at”. Now with over sixty head, the Texas Longhorn cattle Burl and Mary raise are more than just eye candy. Despite horns measuring up to four-feet-long tip to tip, these cattle are some of the gentlest creatures you’ll ever meet–bred for both their disposition and the high quality beef they produce.
The cattle, which come at Burl’s call, are quite the sight. No two cows have the same coloration and even mothers and calves are slight variations of each other. In addition to their meat, their hides and skulls–horns intact–are prized and a nice way to honor and make use of the entire animal.
The longhorns range on the 190-acre farm overlooking the rolling pastures and forests surrounding Hillsboro. The farm is Burl’s home place and in addition to the cattle is home to a historic home surrounded by old oak trees, thus the name, Three Oaks Longhorn.
In addition to raising cattle, Burl and Mary have an assortment of fruit trees, chickens, and a garden. Mary works as a teacher and Burl for the Department of Natural Resources. They market their meat through the Pocahontas Farmers’ Market and directly to customers.
