Healing Farm is a 700 acre farm owned by Doug and Caroline Smith and managed by Steve Rogers. They are in their seventh year of raising high quality, primarily Angus, beef on the farm located in Mill Gap, 14 miles southwest of Monterey, Virginia.
Caroline grew up in Colorado and has always dreamed of raising cattle. In her thirties, she began reading the works of farming and environmental philosophers such as Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson and the late Charles Walter. Inspired by these ideas, Caroline pursued a different form of agriculture, where farms are small and farmers have personal relationships with their customers.
Today, Caroline is proud to raise healthy, natural beef. She practices rotational grazing, moving the cattle over large paddocks over the course of the year to maintain the natural pasture and gives her cattle access to good, fresh water. Caroline works to maintain her natural pasture. She’s a firm believer in raising cattle that only have “one bad day.” In recognition of the farm’s good stewardship, Healing Farm is recognized as part of the Animal Welfare Approved program.
Healing Farm beef is available at Evelyn’s Pantry, the Highland Farmers’ Market, and can be purchase online at her website.
